Malaysian Dreamgirl: Review of MDG Season 1

So Malaysian Dreamgirl has finally come to an end. There's been up and down, drama and tears, back-stabbing and bitching. That's what makes reality series interesting and worth watching. I bet by now, everyone has already heard about the results and our first Malaysian Dreamgirl is Cindy. I'm not going to dedicate this article to her because there's already too many blog entried covering that, be it good or bad.

Anyway, since this is going to be my last entry about MDG Season 1, I think it would be best to write a simple review of what I think about this show and maybe throw in some suggestions at the end.

Basically, this is what I think about the show:

  • It's been a great first try on making an online reality show. Kudos to Capxion Media on making this possible but there's still room for improvement.

  • The editting and production has been choppy and there's certain part of the show that drags a bit too longer and this can be annoying and throw ppl off.

  • Recently I realised that not all episode parts are uploaded at the same time and some parts are missing as well. Since I do not know the total number of parts for that particular episode since it's not fixed, there's occasion where I missed out on some of the episodes.

  • The challenges are way too simple and does not really seem like challenges at all. They are just like simple exercises and the girl with the nicest homework gets the prize. Hohum....

  • The judges and Sazzy are not really that involved in the show. There should be more interaction and more input from the judges instead of just Sazzy giving comments on elimination day.

Hmmmm.....that's about all I think. And now for some suggestions:

  • Include subtitles throughout the show, not only when the girls speak in chinese. As this is an online show, ppl from around the world and watch this and some may not understand Malay and even the English that is used in the show.

  • Make sure that each part of the episodes is only showing a particular event/occasion. There's been improvement in terms of this and I'm really happy but as I said, there's still room for improvement.

  • Increase the difficulty of the challenges. Or maybe even invite individuals from the fashion industry to give the challenges and judged them.

  • As for the third point given above, maybe include an indicator of the total number of parts for that particular episode (eg. (1/7) letting us know that there's a total of 7 parts)

  • The episodes should include feedback and opinions from the judges about the pictures that have been taken instead of just from Sazzy. Maybe show the photoshoot and the judges' comments on Thursday and the elimination on Saturday so that the audience get to know how the professionals in the industry think about those pictures. Better yet if the Thursday episode is brought forward to Tuesday so they will have more time to view the episodes and to cast their votes.

  • Based on the dissatisfaction regarding the final winner, I suggest that the judging method by changed. Instead of purely based on SMS votes, take into consideration the judges' point of view as well. Maybe 70% SMS and the other 30% from the judges. Or the judges choose the bottom 3 and the audience vote on who they want to give a second chance to. This way, it will be fairer and will certainly bring up the standard of the girls. Essentially this show is about choosing a potential model, not the next prom queen. So it shouldn't be based on popularity votes alone.

  • I think another judge should be chosen to replace Kenny Sia. Someone from the fashion and modelling industry or maybe a guest judge for every episode/week. This way we will get better feedback and opinions. Kenny is just there to boost the popularity of the show since he's a celebrity blogger. No offense but he's not professional and as we have seen during the auditions, he's just a normal hot-blooded male and like Elaine Daly said, he's choosing his own dreamgirl instead of those with modelling potential (I hope his fans don't flame me for this).

I'm done blabbling. I think that's about all. And I agree with what Valerie said, despite what the rest have said about this show and their intention about boycotting this show, I think in end they will still tuned in to find out how the second season differs from the first.

So I hope I'll see improvements in terms of the production and the standard of the girls as well in the second season.

P.S. Von Jolly's dresses are GORGEOUS!! Anyone know if they are expensive?

Malaysian Dreamgirl - Top 3

Tuned in to Episode 15 of Malaysian Dreamgirl and I was real shock of the outcome in the end. This is the last elimination episode before the grand finale and three girls were sent home in this episode. It didn't turned out the way I expected.

Spoilers ahead....Don't scroll down if you haven't watched the episode yet

And the Top 3 in Malaysian Dreamgirl are:

Adeline

Cindy

Hanis

From the 3 girls left in the show, I can't say they're undeserving but IMHO there're better girls among the final 6 girls.

Here's my take on who should have stayed on...

My first choice would be Jay. She's tall and her facial features are very defined and her body are to die for @_@ She's experienced and her pictures always turned out okay, if not superb. But her last photoshoot for Von Jolly was so-so, not her best...Nevertheless, her performance has been quite consistent throughout the competition and I really enjoy the fact that she has a mind of her own and a very matured and collected personality. And she carries herself very well and very well spoken too. That's why she's my top choice for Malaysian Dreamgirl, she got the whole package going for her.

The second choice would be Datin. Yup...she made it into the Top 3 and I'm glad she did. She have never been in the bottom 3 and it just goes to show that she have a very good group of supporters behind her. To me, she's pretty normal to tell you the truth. You could walk pass her and never know that she is Hanis. She's like the girl-next-door and just like people you see everyday in your life. You're unlikely to go "OH WOW" and be completely be mesmerized and having to pick up your jaw from the floor when you see her but maybe it's her bubbly personality that makes me root for her. But she earned good review from Andrew from Andrewsmodel (you'll know what I'm talking about if you've watched Ep15) so I hope she wins this.

My third choice would be Eyna. Yes yes...I know she's not in the Top 6 but I'd never thought her elimination was justifiable. Despite her great pictures and the high opinions everybody have of her, she'd been in the bottom 3 for a number of episodes before her untimely elimination. She takes great pictures and her facial features are good. To me, she got model material. I don't admit to be an expert in fashion and modelling and maybe my opinions have been swayed by opinions from other individuals but what the heck, she takes great pictures.

So here's MY top 3 Dreamgirls:

Jay

Hanis

Eyna

But what's done, done. So we'll see how things go in the finale.

I'm rooting for Hanis...What about you?

Malaysian Dreamgirl - A taste of the real deal...

the girls from the Malaysian Dreamgirl finally gets a taste of the real deal. they were given a chance to do the runway walk during the launching of the Malaysian International Fashion Week. it's a big event for fashion designers in Malaysia where they get to showcase their work and designs on the runway.

the girls were given a chance to model clothes for Karl Ng and this is definitely their first big break in the fashion modelling industry. they get the exposure they need and this is such a big scale event with professional models and celebrities in abundance.

Jay and Hanis are the luckiest in the lot because they were chosen to model for another 3 designers during the show. so they get to go out on the runway for a total of 4 times! all of them look great on the runway and they put on a great show. as for Ringo, the way she puts it, it seems like she got short-changed because she got chosen to be Karl Ng's muse...i still don't understand why -__-"

the girls' latest photoshoot is modelling creations from Carven Academy of Fashion at the Bar Savanh Too at Plaza Mont' Kiara. looking at their pictures from this photoshoot, i don't think any of them did very well, just looks ok to me. and during the show, Nadia seem a bit stressed out and affected by the fact that she was in the bottom 3 during the last elimination round.

Adeline

this angle is similar to last week, not too flattering

Cindy

this shoot is ok but nothing special...

Hanis

she has pouty lips and whole mysterious sexy thing going...

Jay

me likey her curves and the dress too...but i maybe biased coz i like Jay =P

Nadia

her gaze and her eyes look a bit lifeless...i perfer her intense look better.

Ringo

her face looks a bit puffy and this pic is not so nice >.<

what do you think? who's going to be eliminated next?

Malaysian Dreamgirl - The Top 6

just finish watching episode 11, the latest episode of Malaysian Dreamgirl. this episode is rather interesting as the production crew, host, and judges decided to take control of the whole situation that is starting to get out of hand in the Dreamhome and among the girls as well.

Heart to Heart Session

the girls had a heart-to-heart session with Elaine Daly and each and every one of them was given a chance to voice out their feelings, disappointment, frustration or the opinions that they have of the other 6 girls. Nadia got pretty emotional during the session and most of them said that she is way too emotional, dramatic and that she is always talking about herself. As for Ringo, she said she is depressed and this resulted in her keeping to herself in the Dreamhome, instead of mixing with the other girls. As for Jay, she voiced her feelings about some of the girls not helping out around the house and she specifically directed that comment to Cindy. Then it was Cindy's turn. after Cinday said her piece, the rest started to voice their opinions and feelings and Fiqa's and Nadia's comment just made me snigger:

Cindy's turn

Fiqa : You're loud, you're selfish.... (Good 1, straight to the point)
Nadia : Your words, your actions, the way you chew your food like..........it's really loud (this made me laugh)

Strangely, Fiqa's and Adeline's part was not shown and that part just ended so abruptly and I think Cindy was still talking. anyway, after that session, the production crew decided to shift all of the girls into one single room. maybe to avoid the controversy that happened previously, what with the girls from the other room overhearing conversation from the second room. i hope the girl decided to call truce, it will make their life there a lot easier.

the episode also covered a fitting session that they had for a runway show for mifa. i didn't what that stand for, so i ask my best net friend, Mr. Google. MIFA probably stands for Malaysia International Fashion Award or Malaysia International Fashion Alliance. Not too sure though. The designer (i'm assuming his name is Karl Ng because they keep showing that name but never really introduced him) was kinda strange tho. he was addressing the girls but he decided to face the camera and with the girls behind him -___-"

he has an inferior complex. he's not brave enough to face the girls :P (please don't sue me)

After the clothes fitting and a practice walk, he gave some comments about their performance and he chose one girl as his muse. Ringo got chosen but she doesn't seem really happy about it. she made it sound like it is such a negative thing and the reason she was chosen because the designer wanted the taller girls on the runway. i thought being an artist's muse is the highest honour they can give you. it means you become their source of inspiration and is it? please let me know if i get the meaning wrong @_@

Oh, and Nadia got a chance to go for a photoshoot to build her portfolio because she won the last fashion challenge. Hohum....nothing special for this part.

The final 2 parts as usual is reserved for the elimination round. Sazzy decided it's time to get serious and she lectured them and told the girls to step up and kept emphasizing the fact that this is a competition and not a walk in the park. Sazzy gave them a piece of her mind and she was giving some serious comments about of the girls' performance for the wella photoshoot.

and the girls at the bottom 3 are

Adeline, Nadia, Fiqa

Suprised to see Adeline and particularly Nadia. Nadia has been quite a hit in this show.

but finally the girl eliminated in this round is:

Fiqa saying goodbye

sad to see her go. she's an enjoyable person to watch. she has lots of things to say and she's not too pretentious. at least that is what i think.

the top 6

i guess the girls really have to step up their performance. only 6 girls are left and the stake is getting higher. the next episode will be their runway show for mifa.

Malaysian Dreamgirl - The temperature is rising in the Dreamhome...

just finish watching the new episode of Malaysian Dreamgirl and i gotta say that things are really heating up. the first two parts of the episode were on how the girls felt about eyna being eliminated and all the girls said that she shouldn't have been voted out because eyna is one of the best among the girls. some of the girls appeared teary but eyna was quite composed when they interviewed her. she said she had been expected to be eliminated, that's why she's just taking everything in stride. she said that she'll try taking up part-time modelling and i guess this is not gonna be the last we see of her. kudos and good luck eyna!!

the third part of the episode showed the photoshoot process. the photoshoot for this time is showcasing hair for wella professional. so all the shots are close-up of their face and lots of facial expression and attitude is needed for this photoshoot. initially elaine daly wanted them to proceed with the photoshoot in their own style without much intervention and instruction from her or the photographer but from their performance, she interjected and started directing the photoshoot. they still have lots to learn i guess.

after the photoshoot, they paid a visit to celebrity fitness, one of the show's sponsor. nothing much here, some exercising and yoga lessons. the last two parts were the interesting bits. they showed the girls calling home and talking to their family and friends. cindy's father was commenting on how unfair the show is potraying her daughter etc and said that they should have focus more on her talent and performance in the show instead. but somehow, i don't really understand what's the big hoohaa about the shoes and tomatoes issue that lead to this. afterall, those are petty issues, so why make a big fuss out of it @_@

enough of that, here's some pics from the wella photoshoot.

Adeline

this pic is not nice, the eyes look lifeless and despite the angular feature of her cheek, it still made her look puffy and chubby.

Cindy

another not so nice pic from cindy. not much attitde and expression from the face. and she look so lost and confused.

Fiqa

i like this picture, the hair and makeup look nice. she does seem a bit unsure but i like it =P

Hanis

bad picture. dunno what to say about this >_<

Jay

somehow this pic makes jay look a bit like alison. i like this pic, the white falsies are so contrasting compared to the rest of the pic. it draws your attention to her eyes. it would have been better if she had that intense stare at something but i guess the faraway look does suit the hairstyle.

Nadia

maybe it's the hair but i don't like this pic. the hair, the expression, the angle, the makeup...i'm not sure but it just seem so weird to me -__-

Ringo

the pic reminds me of Princess Leia from Star Wars. what do you think? LOL....anyway, i think ringo needs to learn more about expressing herself in prints and photoshoots. looks okay but the pic doesn't wow me.

aside from the girls, i must say that the production crew of the show is really improving and the quality is better. and i really like they new approach to segment and divide the episode. it's easier to follow and nicer to watch. good job and keep up the good work ^_^

ok ppl, it's time to vote for your favourite girl again. do vote and you have until monday midnight before the voting is close. there's only few more weeks left, makes you wonder who really have what it takes to become the first Malaysian Dreamgirl. We'll just have to stay tuned to find out.

Malaysian Dreamgirl - The ugly truth behind reality shows...

phew....finally my 2 midterms. hope i didn't too badly.

anyway, after getting back home, i went to the Malaysian Dreamgirl website to get my episode dose. episode 9 startly quite nicely and it seems to be longer compared to the previous episodes. and i like the way where they separate different event/outing into a single episode part. it's easier to follow that way. previously, each part ended so abruptly and the scene continues with the next part. the new editing sure makes more sense and presentation is way better.

the reason for my title is because Eyna got eliminated in this episode. despite all the good things everyone seem to say about her, she was still eliminated. but after all, MDG is essentially a reality show that is judged based on the member of votes each finalist get every week. therefore, it can be anyone's playing field as long they have the connection and money to ensure that they get plenty of votes each week.

each and every week, eyna's pictures have came out nicely and even the judges commented on how nice and perfect they seem. they described her pictures as effortless and will always turn out really nice....but ironically, eyna had been in the bottom three for all three elimination rounds and in the first round, she got lucky because jean pulled out. if not, she would have been eliminated much earlier.

but i guess, owing to the exposure and experience from this show, she will make it big in the modelling field. even sazzy, the host said that she expect to see eyna's work in magazine and not to give up on modelling. with her assets and the right connection, surely this would very likely happen in the future.

good luck eyna and here's some of her pcitures from MDG

After eyna's untimely elimination, the last remaining 7 finalist.

so ppl, to prevent from seeing potential being wasted, remember to vote for your favourite girl, kay...

Malaysian Dreamgirl - The plot thickens...

i just finished watching the latest episode of Malaysian Dreamgirl and i was right. the drama around the house is starting and from the episode, the plot is certainly thickening. this episode they revealed who they were b*itching about in the last episode. the three girls that they wanted out are Cindy, Adeline and Valerie. particularly Cindy but most of them are okay with the latter two but because the three of them always hang out together, so i guess too bad for them.

the conversation between Cindy and her father was so funny. it certainly proves that there's some truth in their claim where they say Cindy is so fake. i was laughing my head off, she was going on and on and on...about how everyone is boycotting her and shunning her that she kinda lost her temper by the end of the conversation. oh and the father was giving her some advice about not being so frank with her opinions of others so that life can be easier and not to cry so much. LOL.....Cindy, a small advice: it's not really good for your reputation if conversation like that is aired. so be careful with your words, darling...the production crew knows how to translate Mandarin.

Hanis and Fiqa were b*tching about Cindy for whole 7 to 8 minutes of the show and clearly there's a lot of things happening in the background. about Cindy not making an effort to clean the house and never doing housework. and i think Cindy is a bit overboard when Hanis mentioned about the egg incident. but strangely, Fiqa and Hanis seem a bit teary-eyed during the interview. wonder why though....Adeline comments about the rest of the girls being jealous of Cindy was so...so....naive *roll eyes*...maybe they are, but it's highly unlikely. they seem more annoyed than jealous to me.

towards the end of the show, the second elimination round was carried out and the girl with the least votes will be sent home.

bottom three

the unpopular girl aka Cindy gets to stay on...

in the end, Valerie was sent home. she was really sad to leave and one of the production crew had to help her down the stairwell.

now the quirky girl is not in the competition anymore :(

8 more to go...who will be eliminated next? the next show will be shown on Saturday, so stay tune, kay?

Malaysian Dreamgirls - The drama starts....

i've been watching Malaysian Dreamgirl since it started showing in march. for those that have no freaking idea what i'm talking about, Malaysian Dreamgirl is Malaysia's first online reality model search. despite being such a new programme, the show is actually quite good with a suprisingly large group of sponsors. and all the freebies that the finalist got from the show, makes me want to join to show as well :P and they went for flying fox, that's like so cool. the model that wins even get to drive back a brand new nissan latio... but i hope the editing crew lower the volume when they get freebies though, it's quite unnerving, 12 girls screaming at the same time *shudder*

as i was saying, the show is starting to heat up now. the finalist is required to stay together in a house for the duration of the competition and from the episodes shown last week, there's some sign that the drama will start soon. apparently, some of the finalists don't mix too well with the rest. but not too sure who's who yet as they never really state the finalist's name. oh well, i'll just have to stay tuned to find out. can't wait for the catfights, hair pulling and scream fight to start happening.....lol..

anyway, here's some eye candy from the latest photoshoot at Precinct 2, Putrajaya.

Adeline

i really like her during the audition show but somehow as the show progresses, she doesn't shine as much.

Cindy

her pics usually don't turned out too well and her crying scene was a bit annoying -__-

Eyna

she has very unique facial features but somehow i find the face a bit "lacking" and something just don't look right, hmmm...maybe it's just me. but i like the pic alot.

Fiqa

not much to say about her but this pose of her look so not model-like >.<

Hanis

she look so much like a biker chick in this pic.

Jay

she's so masculine in this pic. i like...and her legs are like sooooo long.

Nadia

my first impression of her was "wow, she's scary". throughout the show, she looked very scary and "garang". i think it's because of her eye brows? anyway, i really like this pic and at first, i couldn't even recognise it was her. the pic look so calm and comfortable, just lazing away in the armchair.

Ringo

strangely, her outfit for this photoshoot look so feminine compared to the rest. and the pose look feminine too...hmmm...

Valerie

i miss her big hair, but her new hairstyle looks great too. she's the quirky girl and oh so cute. but this pic doesn't do her justice. her previous pic for women's secret was like WOW, she looked great and she got nice assets.

that's all, only 9 left. too bad Alison got eliminated. and why oh why Jean pulled out. gonna miss them both on the show.

can't wait for the next show....
